Adolphe Adam
The Postillon from Lonjumeau
This is the outlandish tale of what happens to the postilion Chapelou when he marries innkeeper Madeleine. On their wedding night, the Marquis de Corcy notices Chapelou’s fine tenor voice and offers him work his theatre, thus putting an end to the newlywed’s family life! Chapelou leaves his wife on the spot. Fast forward ten years: Madeleine has become a wealthy heiress, and Chapelou a much-admired singer. When they meet again, the former coachman, failing to recognise his spouse, again asks for her hand. Will he be arrested for bigamy? Michel Fau, known for his turns of fancy, brings this little-known comic opera back to the stage in a sparkling production.
