The true classics are an endless source of fresh interpretation. Tchaikovsky’s great opera, and flagship of Romanticism, Eugene Onegin, is no exception. Marie-Eve Signeyrole transposes the action to the end of the 1990s, setting it in kommunalka, the communal flats that were a legacy of the Bolshevik Revolution. Thus, the celebrated duel morphs into a game of Russian roulette. A bold interpretation that earned critical acclaim when it was premiered at the National Opera House in Montpellier in 2014.
