Giuseppe Verdi
Simon Boccanegra
A hymn to freedom and tolerance, Simon Boccanegra is without doubt Verdi’s most political opera. Premiered in 1857, and reworked in 1881, it was inspired by the true story of a corsair who, in the 14th century, became the first doge of the Republic of Genoa from outside the upper classes. In Philipp Himmelmann’s production, the monumental set points up the bureaucracy that stifles our societies, while the music offers the choirs a sumptuous score and the baritone voice one of its finest roles in the history of opera.
