THE MESSIAH - Accentus English version

THE MESSIAH

Program

Georg Friedrich Haendel
Messiah

It took Handel just three weeks to compose an oratorio that has become one of the masterpieces of classical music. Working on a libretto by Charles Jennens, who drew his inspiration from the Bible and from the Epistles of Paul, Handel evokes Christ’s Coming, Passion and redemptive force. Handel’s treatment is anything but an abstract theological vision. Its true sense of drama, rich in colours, imitative effect, and innovative counterpoint combine to make the music incarnate, potent and moving. A tour de force that brings together German Passions and Italian opera and that has been an unfailing hit since it premiered in Dublin in 1742.
