Charles Gounod
Roméo et Juliette
During a masked ball, Romeo and Juliet fall in love at first sight, but their passion comes into conflict with their families at war. By adapting Shakespeare’s tragedy to the operatic form, Charles Gounod delivers for the 1867 World’s Fair an intense score, full of marvellous arias enhanced by sophisticated orchestration. Eric Ruf chooses to stage the opera in the theatre décor created for Shakespeare’s play at the Comédie-Française, adding to the dramaturgical challenge an environmental preoccupation.
