MEDEA - Accentus English version

Luigi Cherubini

Medea was the mother who killed her children to avenge herself against Jason for abandoning her, but will the real Medea please step forward? Was she a monster, a victim or a madwoman? All myths share one quality: they offer creative artists the chance to propose new, personal visions. In 1797, Luigi Cherubini made the infanticide the central focus for his opera. Now, theatre director Jean-Yves Ruf sees Medea as a woman in love in a “summit of dramatic music”, as Brahms described the opera, which influenced Bellini’s Norma and is conducted here by Hervé Niquet.
