ITALIANS IN PARIS

Program

Saverio Mercadante

Sinfonia su motivi dello Stabat Mater di Rossini

Gioacchino Rossini

Pianto di Armonia sulla morte di Orfeo

Luigi Cherubini

Requiem

19th century Italian musicians regularly made the trip to Paris to enhance their reputation. This was particularly true of Cherubini, much of whose career was played out in France, to such an extent that he was appointed superintendent of Louis XVIII’s chapel in the year he composed his Requiem in C minor. This magnificent work shares the bill with the Cantata on the death of Orpheus, written by the most French of all Italians: Rossini. Laurence Equilbey hands over the baton to the charismatic Leonardo García Alarcón, guest conducting Insula orchestra for the first time.
