FANTASIO - Accentus English version

Jacques Offenbach

Musset meets Offenbach: a promising combination that was nonetheless torpedoed by critics when Fantasio premiered at the Opéra Comique in 1872. The French army’s recent defeat at the hands of the Prussian army at Sedan being undoubtedly still too fresh in the memory was enough to see off the composer’s attempt to step outside the box of operetta. The very idea that a German could set Musset’s eponymous play, a jewel of the French heritage, to music was untimely to a degree! Over a century later, the work is reinvigorated by Thomas Jolly’s inspired and poetical staging in which traditional trestle table theatre renders the full grace of Offenbach’s score. An opera that oscillates between exuberance and delicacy, prefiguring in many ways his Tales of Hoffmann.
