Henry PURCELL (1659-1695)
Dido and Aeneas
The accentus choir with the Opéra de Rouen Haute-Normandie team up again with Vincent Dumestre and Le Poème Harmonique for a second season devoted to Dido and Aeneas, Henry Purcell’s only opera, yet a masterpiece of the genre. The story is that of the love affair between Dido, Queen of Carthage, and Aeneas, Prince of Troy. In late 17th century Britain, the work, combining theatre and pageant – entertainment made up of instrumental music, song, dance and machinery – was the vehicle for Purcell’s dramatic ideal. The work is a jewel of extreme concision that ends with Dido’s dying lament, one of the finest and most moving pages in the history of opera.
