Gioacchino Rossini
Count Ory
Inspired by a cheeky popular song, Rossini’s penultimate opera deserves to be revisited. The two acts, as virtuosic as they are droll, are a succession of cross-dressing, qui pro quos and plot twists picturesquely set in the Middle Ages, while arch-womanizer Count Ory will stop at nothing to win over a young and attractive widow. The combination of Scribe’s lively libretto and Rossini’s musical fireworks explain why the opera was such a hit when it premiered in 1828. Pierre-Emmanuel Rousseau’s imaginative staging is a further reason to succumb to the charm of this highly enjoyable opera.
