Giacomo Puccini
Madame Butterfly
Suppose Madame Butterfly had not been the Japanese lady who fell fatally for the American dream but, instead, a young Westerner ensnared by a fantasy Japan, replete with manga, robots and kawaii fashion? For the first time, Jean-Philippe Clarac and Olivier Deloeuil have turned the original premise on its head, better illustrating the cultural misunderstanding that has subsisted since the 19th century between East and West and the tragic seeds of which are fermented in Puccini’s opera.
