Johann Sebastian Bach
Johannes Passion
Though Bach never wrote an opera, his Passion According to Saint John, with its dramatic approach to the evangelical narrative, was a step in that direction. The oratorio, composed in 1724 for the Church of Saint Thomas in Leipzig, was, in keeping with Lutheran doctrine, designed to arouse a sense of piety among the faithful. Laurence Equilbey brings an original interpretation to Bach’s masterpiece by dissociating the two choirs (one singing and the other commenting the action): a striking contrast that intensifies the power of the Passion.
